Interventions
Our study will use an Alberta-made digital wellness platform called My Viva Plan® with online individual guidance from healthcare professionals.
My Viva Plan® is a multimodal digital program that can be used to promote self-care in key health pillars, including mind, nutrition, and fitness. It offers fitness and meditation sessions, meal plan ideas, and goal tracking with coaching tips that can help manage chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.
What will I do in the study as part of the intervention?
If you participate, you will be assigned to one of two groups:
Both groups will receive handouts with information on how to be healthy and active, a Fitbit activity monitor, and support phone calls.
Group 1
Will use the digital wellness platform daily with guidance from healthcare professionals for 16 weeks, then alone for 8 weeks. Participants will also attend two online cooking sessions.
Group 2
You will receive publicly available health education materials on physical activity, healthy eating, and health awareness, as well as a Fitbit Inspire 3 device for its daily use during the study. You will receive support telephone calls from the research team for 24 weeks.
If you are assigned to Group 1, here is a brief overview of what will happen during the individual sessions.
Online individual sessions: You will receive consultations through one-on-one online sessions with a Registered Dietitian, Qualified Exercise Professional, and Mental Health Professional every 8 weeks to create a plan and set goals for your nutrition, physical activity, and mental health. You will also receive a 1 hour virtual tour of the My Viva platform.
To support your exercise goals, you will be given resistance bands and dumbbell weights for exercising at home throughout the 24 weeks.
How does this benefit me?
The expected benefit of taking part in this study is to reduce your waist size and improve your health.
You will be provided with tools and resources to help support behavior changes to promote your physical and mental health.
You will also benefit from the individual meetings with the healthcare professionals throughout the 16 weeks.
Based on the results of this study, there is potential for long-term improvements in patient care.
